My Story

Hey there! I’m Swaraj Madan Thorat, and I want to share my cool journey with you. So, I grew up in Ahmednagar, not too far from Pune, India – a hundred kilometers, to be precise. After cruising through my 10th standard, I decided to dive into the world of Mechanical Engineering. I snagged a diploma spot at JSPM College of Engineering.

Now, the thing is, it seemed like the next logical step was to keep rolling with Mechanical Engineering for my bachelor’s. But deep down, I was itching for something different, you know? Not because I wasn’t rocking it in Mechanical, but I just wanted to shake things up. All my buddies were going for the usual suspects – Mechanical, Computer, Electrical – and I wanted to be the rebel.

After some detective work, I spotted my chance to switch things up. I had options like Biotechnology and Biomedical Engineering, and I picked Biomedical Engineering. Scored a spot at the fancy Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi College of Engineering. But before taking the plunge, I had a heart-to-heart with my dad. He gave me the green light, saying if I believed in it, go for it. And so, my journey in Biomedical Engineering kicked off.

Post-graduation, I landed a gig as a Business Development intern at OMC Medical Ltd. Surprise, surprise – they thought I was pretty cool and offered me a full-time gig as a Business Development Specialist. Nice, right?

While doing the whole business development hustle, I rubbed shoulders with folks from medical device companies. That’s when I stumbled upon the world of buying informatics – a cool mix of genomics, DNA, RNA, and proteins. I even got to attend a swanky event in Mumbai where I chatted up with Mark Waechter about bioinformatics and the future. That chat lit a spark, and I decided to pursue a master’s in bioinformatics.

Fast forward to an exciting stint at Arab Health 2023 in Dubai, representing OMC Medical. I got to meet high-flyers, got a promotion to manager, and then, after six months, decided to spread my wings. Leaving the comfort of a stable job, I kicked off my master’s journey in bioinformatics. Yeah, it was tough saying goodbye to the steady gig, but I felt like I needed to shake things up.

I landed a spot at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis. Bioinformatics turned out to be a wild ride – a mash-up of biology, computer science, and more. Getting settled took a minute, but once I did, there was no stopping me. Workshops, seminars, projects – you name it, I dove in. Now, I’m knee-deep in different projects. Check out my portfolio for the deets.
